NEW EXHIBITS ABOUND AT THE

ST. LOUIS ZOO

AN EXCITING
NEW CHAPTER

PRESWERX GLOBAL recently undertook the exciting task of providing ideation, conceptual design, and digital twin creation services for an expansion to the St. Louis Zoo. Utilizing Unreal Engine, we created virtual life-like environments that allowed stakeholders to visualize the project early in its conception. Our team focused on seamlessly integrating the new 2-story addition into the existing structure at the Zoo’s North Entrance. This complex design aimed to blend visually and structurally with the current building while considering the challenging terrain and safety for pedestrian foot traffic. Our preconstruction team conducted extensive studies and developed conceptual cut-sections through the existing and proposed buildings to anticipate potential challenges.

CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING
AND EXPLORATION

For the St. Louis Zoo expansion, PRESWERX GLOBAL meticulously considered various types of spaces within the new addition. The design included office spaces, classrooms, storage areas, a lunchroom, restrooms, showers, outdoor classrooms, a maker-art space, pre-k spaces, neighborhood habitats, a dedicated drop-off space, and covered bicycle storage. Our experience in delivering resilient and adaptable facilities for educational and administrative purposes was integral to this project. We ensured that each space met high-performance building standards, with a focus on sustainability and long-term usability. Our expertise in integrating educational opportunities into the building’s design helped create an environment conducive to learning and exploration.

ANIMAL WELFARE AND
THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

In addition to indoor facilities, the expansion project required thoughtful design for outdoor exhibits like the Prairie Dog, Guanaco, and Mara Walk-Thru areas, forming the Underground Cities themed area. This area emphasized the natural behaviors of these animals, with ample space for burrowing and foraging. PRESWERX GLOBAL worked closely with the zoo’s design team to create exhibits that mimicked the animals’ natural habitats, ensuring proper ventilation, natural sunlight, and suitable substrates for digging. We integrated innovative management methods to address common challenges in animal care, enhancing both animal welfare and the visitor experience.

UNIQUE VIEWING
OPPORTUNITIES

PRESWERX GLOBAL also played a crucial role in conceptualizing the Freshwater Wilderness area, including the otter exhibit. This exhibit required a seamless, natural environment with interconnected pools and land areas for resting and denning. We designed a sophisticated filtration system to maintain clean water and incorporated elements such as hiding spots and climbing structures to stimulate the otters. Our design ensured the exhibit mimicked the otters’ natural habitat while providing visitors with unique viewing opportunities through underwater and above-water perspectives, made possible by specialized glass and acrylic installations.

DESIGNED THE SPACE
TO BE INCLUSIVE

The Water Play area, another key component of the expansion, was designed with safety, accessibility, and fun in mind. PRESWERX GLOBAL ensured the area featured slip-resistant surfaces, proper drainage, and fencing for safety. We designed the space to be inclusive, with accessibility features like ramps and handrails. The splash pad included a filtration and sanitation system to maintain water quality, while the overall design allowed for easy maintenance. The thematic and interactive elements were carefully chosen to provide an engaging and educational experience for children, making the Water Play area a standout attraction within the St. Louis Zoo expansion.
